Tideswell Pubs

In 2022 Tideswell Living History decided to research the many pubs which have existed in Tideswell.

Some are ‘ghosts’ as while the name and location can be found on old maps, the actual building no longer exists. There are others, which are no longer trading, but the building in which they did so still exists, but most usually has become residential accommodation. Then there are a small number of pubs which have less of a history, but are still trading and enjoyed by the Tideswell Community.

The Living History Group were loaned some old documents, dating back to 1799, which related to the history of The Peacock Inn near Parke road, Tideswell (or as the document stated ‘situate at or near to a place called ‘Smithy Stones’). Further research has gradually uncovered the story of the pub and Smithy behind it, including its owners, publicans and Blacksmiths.
