Tideswell Tales

Voices and Pictures from Tideswell and Litton's recent past

About Us

  • We are the Tideswell Living History Group and have received Heritage Lottery Funding for the project.  We launched our project in April 2012  to preserve and communicate the recent past of Tideswell, a village in Derbyshire, UK.
  • The project is collecting the memories and old photographs of Tideswell, Litton and the surrounding area residents, ex-residents and visitors – adults and children – in order to preserve and communicate over 150 years of community life through voices and pictures.
  • Please check back to see what we find. We will post audio excerpts of oral history interviews, photographs and further discoveries, as well as details of events you can come along to and activities you can take part in.
  • Why not get in touch to find out more or enquire about being involved ?

Hi, My father spent much of his youth in and around Tideswell and was related to Oliver Shimwell (I believe he was the headmaster or teacher at the school) and Marion Allport nee Shimwell. who had the Fishmongers with her husband Eric.

We stayed with Oliver and his wife Dorothy in the mid to late 60s and visited the others at the Fishmongers. I have a couple of pictures of the Allports at least one of which is outside the Fishmongers. I have visited Tideswell on a few occasions over the last couple of years but have been unable to identify where the Fishmongers was.

I note that there was a trail in 2015 which mentions it but I cant track down a copy online. Would anybody be able to help me identify the location?

Hi Rob, the Allport’s fish shop was on the High Street in a house now called Black Horse Cottage.

Thanks for that, could you let me know if the cottage near the Market Square end of the High Street or the other end, we are in the area again in a couple of weeks and would love to locate it. Thanks again.

It’s in the middle, on the right as you go towards the Market Square. Opposite the old Methodist Chapel.

I wonder if you could tell me if I’m correct in thinking that there was a Youth Hostel in Tideswell. I stayed at a few hostels in the Peak District in 1974 and I think that one of them was in Tideswell. I remember walking from there along a beautiful track from there either to Buxton or Bakewell. I have a feeling that the track might now be called the Monsal way. Then it was little known as I never saw anyone all day!
