What is Wakes?

Mary Landon introduces Tideswell Wakes, an important event in the village calendar.

“Wakes Week is a celebration of St John the Baptist which is who the local church is dedicated to. And it’s always the nearest week to the John the Baptist Day which is the end of June although we know now they have altered that to literally because of health and safety and the number of police you have to have around it has got to be the last full week in June.”
