Tideswell Tales

Voices and Pictures from Tideswell and Litton's recent past

Tideswell Tales begins

Tideswell Living History Group has received £32,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, Tideswell Tales in Tideswell and Litton. Led by volunteers from the local community, the Group is looking for residents and visitors who are willing to share memories and photographs of childhood, celebrations and traders in the villages.

Tideswell Tales will collect the memories and old photographs of Tideswell and district residents, ex-residents and visitors so that over 150 years of community life can be preserved and communicated to a wide audience. Whilst Tideswell Tales will cover any aspect of the village’s history, the Group is particularly interested in discovering about childhood now and then, community celebrations from Tideswell Wakes Week to the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and how many different Tideswell traders there used to be over the years.

Audrey Hopkins, Chairman of Tideswell Living History Group says, “We are very excited that we have received funding from the HLF for our project which means we can record the memories of Tideswell & Litton folk of all ages. This is an important part of our local history which we hope will be enjoyed for years to come. We are especially looking forward to working with the children in our local schools and hope to help them to see that History is indeed a Living thing as we share our memories together. Anyone interested will be able to access interview excerpts online, in a booklet and on a DVD. They will even be used in a special performance by Tideswell Community Players in 2014.”

The Group has already started recruiting volunteers who will help in all sorts of ways, from oral history recording to organising events, and is looking for more people to get involved. If you would like to find out more, the project is launched with a Memories Day at The Old Grammar School on Wednesday the 9th May from 2pm to 5pm. All are welcome who have memories or old photographs of Tideswell and Litton, or who would like to volunteer. The day includes refreshments. Volunteers will be on hand to write down any memories you may have and take your details if you would like to be interviewed at a later date.

If you would like to find out more or enquire about being involved please get in touch with the group on 01298 872285, tlhg@btinternet.com.

We will regularly add more information, including excerpts from interviews and photographs, here on https://tideswelltales.wordpress.com.
